The experience was made possible by the new $99.99 Samsung Gear VR headgear that was strapped to my head, complemented by the Samsung headphones that supplied the requisite soundtrack, and a Samsung Galaxy Note5 phablet, where content is streamed or downloaded.

These headsets were not really a Samsung idea. The hardware and software that drives the Samsung Gear VR was entirely powered by Oculus. When you accessed the Gear VR software, the Oculus logo was everywhere. When you bought apps in in the Gear VR ecosystem, Oculus maintained the payment gateway. The Oculus logo was on the headset, right next to the Samsung`s, but it was pretty clear which company really managed the system.

After Oculus Go was released, we heard less and less about support for Gear VR. Neither company made any mention of a new Gear VR, so with the Samsung Galaxy S10, it was not surprising that Gear VR was not mentioned anywhere. Since there will be no official Gear VR support for the Note 10, it can be assumed that Samsung will not be releasing any more Gear VRs.

After you finish the tutorial, you're taken to the main hub, where you'll see a series of Windows 10-style tabs floating in front of you. A quick 360-spin reveals that you're on a luxurious patio at Oculus VR's offices. The sprawling area features a cozy boardroom table, a small kitchen area, a massive television, a large white couch and what appears to be an Olympics-size pool with infinity edges. It's très swanky.

Pressing and holding the Back button for 2 seconds cues up the Universal Menu, where you'll find icons for Oculus Home and Passthrough Camera, which lets you peek at the real world through your phone's camera. Reorient centers the headset's direction based on where you're looking, while Brightness lets you adjust how bright or dim the display is. Finally, there's Do Not Disturb, which disables notifications for Phone, Email, Text and social media updates.

Car makers have embraced VR, so why not fashion designers? Samsung has expanded its presence at the New York Fashion Week and brought the Gear VR along. Last year, the company focused on the Oculus Rift and showed people a future where they view clothes in virtual reality before hitting the Buy button.

In simplest terms, the Samsung Gear VR is a head-mounted housing unit for a Samsung Galaxy phone to enable virtual-reality experiences. You can think of it as a VR device that sits somewhere between the rudimentary Google Cardboard and the more technically advanced headsets like Oculus Rift, and PlayStation VR.

Being honest, the new lineup of games and experiences that support the motion controller make for slim pickings. Despite that, we do prefer how the new controller offers superior ergonomics and functionality over its rival, and in a short span of time, developers will harness the power of the controller to deliver top-notch content. This is where the Gear VR excels and shines over its competitors!

2013 - 2018: Elyse began her career in journalism in 2006 as a reporter at several regional New York State newspapers and magazines, including the Press-Republican, North Country Scene, and Malone Telegram, where she covered a range of beats, from local politics to business. She graduated from The University of Massachusetts Amherst in 2011 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in multimedia journalism, and shortly after that, she moved to New York City and stumbled into tech journalism. She worked at both 9to5Mac and 9to5Google as a copy editor at first and then as a reporter. During this time, she also contributed to other news websites, such as the BBC, and she graduated with a Master of Fine Arts degree in writing from The New School in Manhattan. She joined Pocket-lint in 2013 and currently serves as a US-based contributing writer, focusing on tech news and features. She also works as an editor at CBS Interactive. When she isn't working, she can be found renovating her 100-year-old country house in upstate New York with her husband, two Russian Blue cats, and a Husky.

The controller does require you to frequently re-center it, as games where you spin around can lead to the headset/controller spatial relationship drifting off. (For example, after a few minutes you might be physically pointing the controller straight ahead, but your virtual gun is aiming slightly to the right.) We run into the exact same thing with the Daydream controller, though, so this is likely an Android hardware or software limitation.

The phones inside the headset are, however, getting more advanced. Using the Gear with the new Galaxy S8+, I'm seeing more visually striking content that looks far beyond where mobile VR was just a year ago. Affected: The Manor, for example, is a recent thrill ride with A+ presentation, providing realistic environments that could easily pass for Rift or Vive quality.

That covers the first floor of the store. Going up to the second floor, this is the part where Samsung tries to grab you and never let you leave. There is a coffee shop there with big donuts that you can buy and eat in the dining area. But moving past that, there is this interactive wall where you can see the different appliances that Samsung offers and beside it, a kitchen with their appliances working together, showcasing the wonders of Internet of Things. There were too many people in that area so I did not get the chance to play with the stuff. But moving on from there, there is this photo room, where you compare taking photos from the Samsung Galaxy s7 to its competitors like the iPhone, HTC, and so forth. After you take the photo, you can see a side by side comparison of the photo quality. I think that this was the part that really screamed at me that Samsung was not just trying to convince you to buy the phone because this section is basically like the apple store where they lay out all their tablets and phones for you to play with.

Combined with the S-Pen, which does not require a battery, you get Samsung-specific features like Air Command, where you hover the pen over the screen and click a button to open a Samsung menu with options including Samsung Notes and Screen Write. 041b061a72
